Malhotra’s initial training as an editor at Granada TV, provided a formative experience sharpening his eye for detail and narrative pacing. His early work, marked by the short fiction film “IF IT DON’T KILL YA” and the poignant award winning documentary “BIG TIME”, about the struggles of a dwarf rock band trying to be taken seriously in the music business showcased his capacity to blend humour and gravity, whilst illuminating underrepresented voices and complex themes.

His portfolio spans a range of genres, illustrating his versatility as a storyteller. He has filmed across continents, capturing the raw realities of gangmembers in the US , illegal gunmakers and cult leaders in the Philippines, musicians in Africa and magicians throughout bustling European and Asian cities.

An alumni of the BIFA Springboard 2022/23, Atul is also a voting member of BAFTA.
